Footscray Players in Chronological Order 1925-2010

This sub-chapter presents all the men to have played at least one senior game for Footscray between 1925 and up to the end of May 2010. It takes in all the different names of both competition and club.

That full table has columns that provide the players height, weight, date of birth and their actual age in years and days for their first and final games for Footscray. That information was cut out of the FNWB Chart to allow for easier reading and printing.

You will notice how AFL Tables have the surname followed by the given name.

So the chart commences after we moved from the Victorian Football Association (V.F.A) to the Victorian Football League (V.F.L) Competition for the 1925 season. If there was a listing of what happened during Footscray’s V.F.A years- it would be documented by all Footscray historians. However as there appears to be none available- these tables can only be presented from 1925 and sadly not before.

The chart begins when the club played in then named V.F.L before this competition changed its name to the Australian Football League (A.F.L) for the 1990 season and also as both Footscray from 1925-1996 and as the directional nickname from 1997 -2010.

The players who been given what is known as a ‘cap’ number and it began from the first game of the 1925 season. It has been compiled in surname alphabetical order, so George Bayliss having no one ahead of him in this area, has thus been given the number 1. Then on it goes from that Round 1 clash between Fitzroy and Footscray at the Brunswick Street Oval.

There are three shadings and two different font colours. Here directly below is a table with some examples.

The first shading is for the men who played for Footscray and Footscray only. This continues up and onwards from #1 to player # 771, who is the first of a different shade- Tony Liberatore. The bloke who once wore #60 for Footscray back in his debut season of 1986 becomes the first name in this chart to be displayed as having played for both Footscray and the directional nickname.
Then the third shading which commences with player #864- Nathan Brown (who debuted in 1997), is for those who have played only for the directional nickname and NOT ever for Footscray.
Three ‘Western’ men; the above mentioned Nathan Brown, Matthew Dent and Brent Montgomery are of a different colour in this document to all the others to have only played for the directional nickname. Although these three did not play for Footscray, these 3 ‘Westerners’ together with the 17 Footscray men made up the 20 players to have successfully battled against the West Coast Eagles in the final ever game at the Whitten Oval on Saturday 23rd August 1997. So these three ‘Western’ men are distinct from all other ‘Western’ players.
