The North Story - The North Melbourne Football Club Gerard Dowling |
Father Gerard Dowling’s thorough account of his club North Melbourne as they were known when this book was written in 1997.
Firstly I can’t claim this book as it isn’t mine having borrowed it from friends who are keen Universal Kangaroos supporters. The book belongs to Donna and her partner Glenn and they have kindly loaned it to me. Glenn, or as he is more commonly known, Snake. He acquired this name on account of his childhood hero Phil Baker #29 the original Snake Baker so Glenn has had that name for over 25 years. His mother and other relatives have done voluntary work for the Kangaroos for quite a few years so his family is quite steeped in North /Universal Kangaroos tradition
It has many photographs and is well designed with the text and pictures merging in happy harmony. Father Dowling has (similar to our history book-‘Unleashed’) happily and rightly delved into North Melbourne’s pre 1925 years. North like Footscray were a great VFA club and it would probably surprise many to learn that North Melbourne were the third team selected from the Footscray, Hawthorn, North Melbourne trio to gain entry to the VFL for 1925. Most would have assumed it was Hawthorn who pipped Prahran for the third spot, but no it was North Melbourne who were ‘lucky’ as Father Dowling describes.
There is a chapter dealing with the North Melbourne premiership players from 1975,1977 and 1996. There was a big change of personnel between the 1975 and 1977 premiership teams with only nine men appearing in both premiership victories. These players were Malcolm Blight, Arnold Briedis, Barry Cable, Gary Cowton, Brent Crosswell, David Dench, Frank Gumbleton, Ross Henshaw and Wayne Schimmelbusch.
As mentioned in the Roos and Saints chapter all North Melbourne fans should have this book.
