FULL LISTING OF FOOTSCRAY GAMES AGAINST GEELONG IN GEELONG 1925-2008
Geelong is the only Victorian club to have a bona fide home ground these days. All other Victorian teams share a home ground or home grounds with other clubs in the same situation. Melbourne and Geelong are the only Victorian clubs NOT to have left their genuine home to move in with others. The difference between Melbourne and Geelong though, is that just about everyone else in Victoria has moved in with Melbourne to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to share the M.C.G. with Melbourne, no other club has ever played their home games in Geelong. Not all of Geelong's home games are played at Kardinia Park, but they still play some there and one of those in 2008 will be against us.
Here is the full listing for all of Footscray's games away against Geelong. Footscray has only played Geelong and no other club in Geelong. There have been two venues that Geelong have called their home, they are the Corio Oval and Kardinia Park. It was in 1941 that Kardinia Park replaced Corio Oval as Geelong's home. Geelong have won seven Premierships since they and seven other clubs broke away from the Victorian Football Association (V.F.A) to form the VFL for the 1897 season. The first three flags were won whilst they were domiciled at Corio Oval (1925, 1931 and 1937) Geelong's next four premierships have been claimed whilst at Kardinia Park (1951,1952,1963 and 2007) Sadly Corio Oval is the Victorian football's forgotten ground, very little is mentioned about it these days- FNWB considers this a great pity.
Geelong did not take part in the Victorian Football League (V.F.L.) competition (as it was known from 1897-1989) in the years 1942 and 1943 due to travel restrictions that were in place due to the worsening situation of World War Two for Australia with the possibility of a Japanese invasion very likely. Geelong returned to the competition in 1944 and they have remained in the competition ever since.
