This is terrible from today's Herald Sun - he was only 48 -

Sad news for Western Bulldogs fans this week with the death of former forward Steven Knight. Knight who played 17 games as a forward pocket between 1981 and '83 and was nicknamed 'Pretty Boy' died after a long battle with illness. He was 48.

That was from Craig Hutchison- poor man how awful

RIP Steven Knight.

ps- Steven Knight played for Footscray- he didn't play for the Western Bulldogs.

Very sad to learn of Steve's death. I remember him quite well.

He kicked 4 goals in his first game- this was home to St Kilda in the Round 1 clash of 1981. St Kilda thrashed us, one memory of mine that day was St Kilda's Jeff Fehring letting fly with a monster kick- this was two weeks before Fehring's famous goal that was captured by the tv cameras at Moorabbin against Collingwood. However this day- Fehring showed everyone who was there what he could do. His monster against Collingwood was no surprise to me at all after seeing what he did at Footscray in Round 1.

So sadly from that Footscray v St Kilda opening round game of 1981, Steven Knight sadly follows the St Kilda pair of Jeff Fehring and Trevor Barker in no longer being with us. Jeff died suddenly last year- Trevor Barker died of cancer in April 1996.

Steve- he was nicknamed 'Pretty Boy' also played in the match where South Melbourne took part in their last ever game on the Western Oval as South Melbourne. I was there and many may recall how the South Melbourne's banner was all black- a protest gesture by their supporters at the proposed move to Sydney for 1982. As we all know it happened- South was no more and evolved(?) into the Sydney Swans.

Pretty Boy played in a bad era for the Bulldogs, we won only two games in 1981- the second and last of those two was at Waverley against Melbourne- where he kicked 5 goals.

Steve's two last games for Footscray were both against Hawthorn in 1983. The second last was the memorable win at Princes Park- you can see most of the last quarter of that here on the Footscray Tube chapter- his local comrade Robert Groenewegen had his finest hour in that last quarter.

Steve has been in poor health for some time. We certainly hope that he can rest in peace and FNWB sends our sympathy to all of Steven's family.
