We are approaching July 1st 2008. That will be on a Tuesday this year, however back in 1978 July 1, was a Saturday and on that Round 13 afternoon for those who are not familiar with what happened-it was the day that Footscray claimed the record score.

The sub-chapter about that match on FNWB has recently been updated and more will be added to it before the actual 30th anniversary arrives.

In under an hour it will be 30 YEARS TO THE DAY since THAT afternoon when Footscray claimed the record score.

Yes tomorrow which is nearly upon us is July 1st 2008 and as we all should know is the 30th anniversary of the day taht Footscray kicked the then record score of 213 points taking the record from Carlton who at the time had held it from 1969.

Kelvin Templeton kicking 15 goals, Ian Dunstan 7 goals and a few others here and there chopped in to make it total the 33 big ones. Doug Hawkins got three of them.

In response to my previous contribution ----

The sub-chapter about that match on FNWB has recently been updated and more will be added to it before the actual 30th anniversary arrives.

Well er actually no. Nothing extra will be added before the actual anniversary- but it is in the pipeline, that is assured. So keep a look out for the updated sub-chapter regarding one of the greatest days in the history of the Footscray Football Club- that hopefully will appear in under a weeks time.

It appears that this anniversary has passed with no fanfare at all- by the club and the general football media

Imagine it was the Eastern Magpies who kicked a record score back then on Saturday July 1 1978. They would have for months before hand selling -

"The 30th Anniversary of Collingwood kicking the record score- DOUBLE PACK dvds"

I can imagine it - one of the dvds would be the entire game, the other DVD in the set, would be the playing participants reminiscing about it and naturally the current President of the Eastern Magpies would get his head in there.

St Kilda would (quite rightly and properly) make a song and dance about it, I reckon so would Geelong, Essendon, Hawthorn. Melbourne and Carlton would too. One team who definitely would do something would be North Melbourne now that they are North Melbourne again

A few months ago I briefly saw a Footscray player who was took part in that game, who happened to walk past me.

ME: How are you mate- How about the 30th Anniversary of the record score game is only six weeks away, where Templeton kicked the 15 and we got the record score

1978er: Yeah I played in that

ME: I remember it too- I was there- So is the club holding an anniversary, or if not then are you and you teammates from that day holding a reunion/get together?

1978er Er no not that I am aware of

Then he walked on out of earshot of me- it wasn't a proper conversation just me yelling out to him as he walked past me.

So from that I gathered that no 30th anniversary would be held, or if so then they would have to be organising it pretty much now (which was 6-8 weeks ago)

Anyhow it looks like nothing happened.

We show the world that we at the Bulldogs appear to not give a stuff about our history do we?

Well they did nothing for the 30th anniversary- one of the men (a different player from the other 78er I spoke with months ago) told me a few weeks ago that there was no organised get together or reunion. Or if there was- then that particular 78er wasn't invited!

Anyhow as you point out Templeton wore #31 so maybe this year something should be done for it being the 31st anniversary, to make up for the 30th that never was.

I bet the old Fitzroy players celebrate the 30th anniversary later this year of the day they claimed the record score- TAKING IT FROM US :(

Bernie Quinlan, David McMahon, Micky Conlan, Ron Alexander, Laurie Serafini, Gary Wilson etc. Surely one or some of them would organise something, or the newly formed - junior league Fitzroy Football Club that has re- emerged - one of those people might I guess get something going.

David McMahon hasn't wholly embraced the Brisbane Lions- he has stated how the 2001 flag just didn't feel right, he didn't feel part of it, so he would be in for a Fitzroy celebration I reckon.

They can have their 30th and we will settle for a 31st.

Nice of him to spare you a few words :) - at least it wasn't 'Get outta my way' hehe..... can you tell the initials?

Coming up to the 31st anniversary! aybe we can combine it with the 20,000 days since the flag.

Too right. We can have a 20,000 days for 1954 and a 31st anniversary as 31 was Kelvin Templeton's number.

Yes we will have to make a song and dance about that- the 30th didn't get off the ground - so we will have a 31st.

Can someone persuade Kelvin Templeton to come from overseas for the big party - our 31st , the 21st in 1999 got nothing so 31 it is.

Well it was 39 years on Saturday though this time it was

2017: Round 15, Saturday 1st July

compared to

1978: Round 13, Saturday 1st July

as it was then

but 22 less goals

So deduct the 7 from Ian Dunstan and the 15 from Kelvin Templeton and the 2017 team scored as many "sausage rolls" as the 1978 men.
