Thirty years ago Footscray and St Kilda played a tie. The match at the Western Oval was the first of the two meetings between these clubs in 1977. Footscray defeating St Kilda at Moorabbin for the second of that fixture when the season draw was correctly done unlike the joke that it has been since 1987.

For those who don't know what I mean- between 1970 and 1986 the then twelve teams played each other twice. The only consternation was that you may would play one team at Waverley either as your home game or your opponents home game. In 1970 Waverley(or its official name V.F.L.Park) was opened. It operated as a venue from 1970 where its opening game was Fitzroy v Geelong to 1999 and that clash was between Hawthorn and Sydney.

I recall we hardly played Geelong at Kardinia Park in the early 1980's. We didn't go there in 1980,1983 and 1984, where as they would always play at Footscray. We played Geelong at Waverley in 1986 and that was our home game unlike the three previous years and you can also throw in 1977 as it was Geelong V Footscray at Waverley unlike Footscray v Geelong of 1986.

Confused? Because here is a few more useless stats(well to some people they are useless)

Fitzroy however was different- I remember we played them at Waverley in 1976, 1977,1979,1982 and 1983. In all those years except the last one of 1983 it was always Footscray v Fitzroy . For 1983 it was Fitzroy v Footscray. They dodged the Western Oval quite a bit in that stretch from 1976 to 1982. Many would remember that Footscray v Fitzroy at the Western Oval in 1975 was the match where Neil Sachse became a quadreplegic. The Footscray v Fitzroy game of 1976 at Waverley saw Fitzroy leading us by 5 points before Footscray's Allan Stoneham kicked a goal after the siren to give us a one point victory.

Anyhow St Kilda and Footscray or Footscray and St Kilda never played each other at Waverley until 1987. So between 1970 and 1986 when the competition was an even 22 rounds, every one of those seasons in that span of years saw these two clubs meet at Moorabbin and the Western Oval- but NOT the neutral Waverley.

Nevertheless back to my original point- the game we have just seen was a tie like 1977. The other similarity was the same last score. In 1977 we were one point ahead and St Kilda scored a point to level the game. The same scenario in 2007 they had the last scoring shot. St Kilda a point in arrears before they managed a behind to level the game and there was no further scoring after their equalling point.

Would anyone here remember that tied game between Footscray and St Kilda at the Western Oval in 1977?

Has anyone noticed I am being pedantic here and referring to the both the Footscray 12.13.85 v St Kilda 12.13.85 of 2007 and the Footscray 17.14.116 v St Kilda 17.14.116 of 1977 as ties rather than draws? Just a personal idiosincracy of mine- later in the year of 1977 the Grand Final final score of Collingwood 10.16.76 v North Melbourne 9.22.76 is a draw. I make the distinction between a draw and a tie. Pedantic and utterly meaningless I guess - but to me just a personal quirk-
