The 1970's theme day yesterday afternoon with the jumper, shorts and socks worn from that era was brilliant. The socks made the entire uniform complete.

It would have been fantastic if there was the white v and the red collar as well.

That Footscray uniform is a trillion times better than the Western Bulldogs yawning cut jumper. The Footscray jumper has the red and white bands completely circling the jumper, the three coloured socks show we play in three colours unlike the Western Bulldogs uniform which would indicate to anyone that we play in blue- oh with a dash of red and white.

When I first saw it for a few seconds when seeing the back of a player I thought for a minute -hey there's Ray Huppatz and the same for Ross Abbey. Scott West and Matthew Robbins looked great in their number 7 and number 30 guernseys. Then Stevie Power kicking those two crucial goals near the end- with his blondish hair- although for some reason I don't recall Power having blond hair circa 1977!

The gear looked sensational, the red shorts looked really good, btter than what Essendon wear.

As for the sock, please wear those every week, rather than those blue tights.

Blue tights :D , thats a pearler will remember that one- so apt. :P

The red shorts I know aren't everyone's cup of tea, yet I like them. There are different types of red, some look better than others.

The three coloured socks are beautiful- both the pre 1975 and 1975-1996 jumper were guernseys to be proud of, especially with the red collar and the white v. As a youngster in the mid to late 1970's that was the first uniform I knew and it was so much better than what the other 11 clubs had. That is a big statement because the other 11 also had good uniforms as well- none were bad, however Footscray's was the best (bias or no bias if you believe me)

I believe that Collingwood's 1970's jumper is miles better than what they wear now not that its anything to do with me. The black number on the back of their stripes ie Phil Carman, Twiggy Dunne, Ronnie Wearmouth(and he should have played for us!) was to me a fine look. To me it made them look more imposing and closer to their great era of the Coventry and Collier brothers days when they regularly won Premierships. Yet as I said it is none of my affair what they do. Same with Richmond- but I am glad the sash is back on their guernsey.

My reasons for defending the yellow shorts of Richmond is that yellow is in their colour scheme. They play in yellow and black, not yellow, black and white. So why would you hate one of your own colours and want it substituted by a foreign colour? I prefer red shorts to blue- but if we didn't wear red then it must be white or blue, because they are our colours. White is not a designated colour for Richmond. Essendon should wear red shorts when away, if they prefer the black.

Not only did the heritage round kit look good, it could actually be considered quite stylish.

If you go to http://www.psg.fr/fr...y/0,,80,00.html you will see a photo of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for the 1980/81 French season. The then club president was a French fashion designer called Hechter and he decided to design a new team kit for the club (Paris Saint Germain was founded in 1970) - look what he came up with - maybe as close as it can get to Footscray's 70s jumper, short and socks without actually being identical! Merely coincidence? Who knows!

By the way, Nike has tried to fidget with the design of the shirt over the last few years, which in turn has caused a massive reaction from the fans, who even unfurled banners with the message "Hechter's shirt discarded - club's soul betrayed". This has forced Nike to come to their senses.

Yes that was quite an interesting design that Paris St Germain had back then.

The Italian team I had a soft spot for was Sampdoria for two reasons.

1 I liked their stadium- it didn't have the running track- crowd closer in

2 They played in a Footscray like jumper.

Those two combined to make them my Italian team.

A mate of mine who is of Italian parentage, follows Fiorentina because of their supposed lunatic supporters. It appealed to him how they went beserk after Baggio left them to move to Juventus, although he had liked Fiorentina prior to that. This just consolidated his support for them.

Your mate was right - Fiorentina's fans are very passionate, not only about their support for Fiorentina, but about their hatred for all things Juventus. I you ever go to Florence, don't walk around in Juventus gear, please!
I remember Sampdoria's golden age at the start of the 1990's. They had a lot of great players and only Barcelona's "Dream Team" stood between them and a European title. I also think their ground is great, with the steep stands right next to the grass and the square "towers" between the stands always covered with all sorts of banners (made by the fans themselves, of course) during games. It strikes me as the right background for any sporting event.

Absolutely. Sampdoria's stadium always appealed to me when watching the 1990 World Cup Finals. It was the best of all of them during Italia 1990. It was certainly distinctive and those towers certainly stood out.

I remember that 1992 European Cup Final. I got out of bed to watch the last few minutes before preparing and then leaving for work- I was hoping Sampdoria would win- for the reasons mentioned earlier in this topic. However Barcelona prevailed(a long free kick from Koeman wasnt it?) and the next abiding memory was Barcelona walking up the Wembley steps to collect the European Cup. They had changed out of their match day jumper as this was an away strip and put on their Barcelona home guernsey! Well they hadn't actually discarded the jumper just put their red and blue striped shirt over the top of the alternate one they had worn throughout the game.

They were(well they still are) proud of their guernsey that they had to be seen collecting the much sought after European Cup in the traditional Barcelona top. Manchester United won the 1968 European Cup also at Wembley and it was Bobby Charlton collecting it wearing their away blue jumper! Manchester City took the 1969 F.A.Cup wearing their red and black AC Milan shirt!

I admire Barcelona for not allowing sponsorship on their shirt- I guess being such a powerful club they have the means and resources to be able to decline shirt sponsorships. However by sticking to this very honourable practice- they deserve accolades for adhering to their principles.
