G'day all

One thing that bugs me is the entire sport of Aussie Rules is often referred to as 'AFL'. I don't know if it's just a Queensland thing or it gets called that everywhere. I hear people say "My kids play AFL saturday mornings", there was a news report on Ninemsn that said "AFL game hit by tornado", I quickly clicked on the story to see what happened, expecting it to be an AFL team! It turns out to be a regional game in SA somewhere!

I don't remember this happening when it was the VFL, it seems to be something that has happened since AFL took over....

Seeya!

I couldn't agree more.

Years ago people would say- "Such and such played in the Association," meaning the Victorian Football Association- abbreviated to the VFA.

"Frosty Miller/ Pat Flaherty/ Buster Harland/ Barry Nolan was a pretty good player in the association"- meaning that Frosty Miller etc played in the VFA

Another comment outlining what competition they played in would come from my old man at one of our non performing players in moments of frustration-

"Why (insert name) did you drop that?" "Your a LEAGUE footballer- LEAGUE footballers don't drop chest marks!" He would always emphasis the LEAGUE footballer, the L word said stronger and clearer than the other words.

Back in the 1970's and 1980's kids never said- "When I grow up I want to play VFL!"

Different now though-

What is you favourite sport? Tennis, golf, cricket, AFL, soccer?

So in the playground at school some kids will go out at lunchtime and play cricket, some others will play soccer and another group of children will be playing Australian Football League!

It is a bit like saying-

I couldn't remember my PIN number when I was standing in the queue at the ATM Machine!

Thy even used it on the Footy Show last night, Craig Hutchison said that Karmichael Hunt played a handful of AFL games in high school. Didn't know Churchie was in the AFL!

I don't mind it. It's easier to say than 'Aussie Rules' [same amount of syllables but rolls off the tongue easier] and easier than the confusion of 'football' or 'footy'

PS - In my circle of friends an ATM is always referred to as 'An ATM Machine Machine'

I take your point -it is quicker and easier to say.

But I still believe it sounds supercilious- "We are going down to the park to play some Australian Football League" while the other kids play rugby and cricket!?

Anyway I am going off now to listen to my 'Rapid Eye Movement' cd followed by my 'This Is Serious Mum' cd then 'Electric Light Orchestra' cd

Just want to hear that River Phoenix song again from 'This Is Serious Mum'-

'Where am I going to get my next stop action -odds on it'll be Michael Jackson"
