Just a coincidence surely but all our shattering soul destroying close Finals defeats at the Melbourne Cricket Ground occur when we kick to the Ponsford Stand end in the 2nd and 4th quarters- or more particulary when our opponents kick to the Punt Road End in the 2nd and 4th quarters.

Heart breaking soul destroying MCG close defeats

1994 Geelong: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters
1997 Adelaide: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters
1999 West Coast: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters
2008 Geelong: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters
2009 Geelong: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters
2009 St Kilda: they kick to the Punt Road end in 2nd and 4th quarters

Our Great MCG finals-(since 1961) none are close- because our triumphs are always comfortable wins
(we don't win close finals  )

1985 North Melbourne: they kick to the Punt Road end in the 1st and 3rd quarters
1997 Sydney: they kick to the Punt Road end in the 1st and 3rd quarters
2006 Collingwood: they kick to the Punt Road end in the 1st and 3rd quarters
2008 Sydney: they kick to the Punt Road end in the 1st and 3rd quarters
2009 Brisbane: they kick to the Punt Road end in the 1st and 3rd quarters

The two memorable quarters to the Ponsford Stand for me were the third of 1985 and the first of 1997.

The latter was a nine goal first quarter, the 1985 third quarter saw Simon Beasley's 100th goal.
