Just watched Liverpool thump Real Madrid. Then the highlights form the other matches came on and I saw Bayern Munich beat Sporting 7-1.

As we are now all adopted Sporting fans here on fnwb. Let the commiserations begin. We're still in third spot behind Porto [booo!] and Benfica, but I think we can overcome this embarrassing result!

COME ON LEOES!!!!

Oh what can I say? In the first leg we suffered our worst home defeat ever in the European Cups (in more than 50 years!). In the second leg we suffered our record defeat in the European Cups, period. It was horrible. And the goals, my God, it was Keystone Cops meet Benny Hill, bring on the 20's piano soundtrack...

I've seen us defeat Real Madrid, Barcelona, Ajax, Feyenoord, etc. in the European Cups. In 64 we beat Man U (featuring Best, Law, Charlton, etc.) 5-0, we hold the records for the biggest ever win in European Cups matches (16-1 against APOEL of Cyprus, European Cup Winners' Cup, 63/64) and also for the biggest ever away win (9-0 against Akranes of Iceland, UEFA Cup 86/87). Did I mention we hosted the first ever European Champions Cup game, back in the 55/56 season? We weren't even champions in 55, but UEFA invited us to represent Portugal and host the first match because we were so good! Yesterday we were a laughing stock.

Thanks for the encouragement, DMcG, let's hope for the best, the (domestic...) season isn't over yet!

No good I am afraid- the first leg result was a disaster- you really needed the goalkeeper to be sent off in the second leg, then for his replacement to be sent off as well to have any realistic chance of winning that tie.

Sad day because Sporting Lisbon are one of the world's greatest clubs and it looks like you have hit your lowest point. Anyhow I hope you can pick it up in the league- as Bill Shankly said when discussing the importance of the league as opposed to the European prizes

"Never mind Europe -it has been good for Liverpool, good for the country- but this is our bread and butter and this is what we want to win all of the time"

Well said. You know, as my brothers and I were leaving the ground after the 1st leg we found ourselves saying that maybe it would have been a good idea if our team hadn't shown up at all. That means a 0-3 defeat, slightly less embarrassing than 0-5. As for the 2nd leg...

Sporting's teams and athletes, in dozens of different sports, have literally won thousands of national and European titles, but against Bayern we were horrible.

This season is turning out to be really disappointing. Yesterday we played the Portuguese League Cup final against old rivals Benfica. We were leading 1-0 with some 20 minutes to go when the referee conjured up a penalty against us out of thin air, after the ball hit our defender Pedro Silva square in the centre of his chest. Right in the centre, mind you, not even near the shoulders. Apparently the ref's knowledge of anatomy is sketchy and for him it was handball, penalty, second yellow card, sending off.

Benfica scored and the game turned. We lost our focus and only managed to defend in those last few minutes and it finished 1-1. We lost the penalty shoot-out (we're Portugal's answer to the English national team - fatal como o destino, as fatal as fate, as we say around here). So there you have it, the classic tale of righteous indignation and no cup to show for it. Like that goal against Adelaide...

It was the 2nd ever League Cup. We also lost last year's final on penalties, against Vitória of Setúbal. Scrap the darn thing, I say. No one asked for it and the League was only after TV money when it created it. No one will miss it, least of all Sporting.

Oh dear - losing to Benfica that makes it worse. So the League Cup is only 2 years old in Portugal- they have had it in England for nearly 50 years- with finals at Wembley since 1967 (excluding those recently at Cardiff)
