Not a bad article from Peter Hanlon

http://www.theage.co...0216-1tbty.html

It deals with a few others before Callan Ward who left and came back.

For those of you not around or too young to recall Gary Dempsey's departure over the 1978-1979 off season, it was a massive issue. He was the recipient of aggressive abuse for many seasons whenever he played us. That game at Footscray in Round 2 then our victory over them later in the year at Arden Street, the high water mark of the seething vitriol directed towards him.

His last game against the bulldogs was Round 3 on Saturday April 14 1984 at Arden Street and there was derision and ridicule for him that day as Footscray won by 63 points. Gary Dempsey was to retire soon after it.

As for Callan Ward- I doubt the hatred will be as much as it was for Gary Dempsey .

I guess people will mostly blame the League itself, for allowing Greaterwesternsydney to throw huge amounts of money around. Ward was never going to reject Greaterwesternsydney's offer (what's wrong with plain West Sydney?)...

Let's hope the AFL doesn't run itself to the ground trying to prop up teams in Queensland and NSW, they lost money last year for the first time since God knows when.

Yes the big financial loss than has occurred is a worry for the reason that we only require a change of direction at the AFL (ie new directors with a different ideology) and struggling clubs could be given the DCM or more correctly the DCNY -(Don't Come Next Year)

Jeff Kennett has finished at Hawthorn, I doubt he will spend the next few years staying at home just tending to his orchids and vegie patch. He may want (and receive) an AFL directors gig.

The next couple of years IS NOT the time to financially struggle. Many things can change.

Western Sydney will be the teachers pet for quite a few years, as will the Gold Coast especially now that in the last day their national soccer team has been given the Big A from the A league.
