Just heard North Melbourne coach Brad Scott on the AFL Winners program mention the Shinboner Spirit on the tv. No problem with Bon Scott invoking memories of the Shinboner Spirit (whatever it is?) but if using the same logic and being consistent- wouldn't Hawthorn have the Maybloom Spirit and Melbourne the Fuscias Spirit?

The point I am making is that they got rid of the Shinboners as their nickname to become the Kangaroos which is a generic nickname really- the kangaroos in this country. Bit like an Auckland/ Christchurch/ Wellington/ Palmerston North (hello John Clesse) rugby team having as their nickname the kiwis.

Maybe they should drop the kangaroos and re-introduce the Shinboner(s) as their current nickname? At least it is original and is totally and only connected to the North Melbourne Football Club.

They seem to love their previous nickname, so over to Hawthorn and Melbourne. Then Geelong could have the Pivotonian Spirit. Another reason why the demise of Fitzroy was so terrible- we could have had the Gorillas Spirit

I'd say that the "Shinboner" references will never cease, because, as you posted, it is a very original nickname and exclusive to North Melbourne. "Kangaroos", on the other hand, isn't.

By the way, did you know that there are two teams nicknamed "the Kangaroos" in Prague? In 1927 Czech club "Bohemians" toured Australia and someone gave them a kangaroo, which they took back home and offered to the Prague zoo. Since then Bohemians were known as the Kangaroos and adopted a kangaroo mascot and a kangaroo badge.

A few years ago the club went bust and was reformed by the fans a few rungs down the ladder of the Czech league system as "Bohemians 1905", keeping the kangaroo nickname.

The president that had run the club into the ground then became involved with another team and somehow got them to adapt the Bohemians name, colours and badge. Both teams eventually got promoted to the top division and are now both involved in a relegation struggle. They already played one "schizophrenic" game this season and the second one was scheduled for April 11, but was postponed. Needless to say, both clubs view themselves as the "true" Bohemians and despise their namesake from across town.

Apparently, some people are mooting the creation of a third Bohemians club, probably just because it would be a good joke. Prague was Franz Kafka's hometown, but I suppose that even he would find the Prague Kangaroos saga confusing...

There is a team in Ireland called Bohemians. I should look it up as to whether these two teams have played each other in Europe? Maybe the old Fairs Cup or the old UEFA Cup?

Thanks for mentioning that, I do recall hearing something about a team in Europe that had the Kangaroo as a mascot/emblem or logo. You have now explained that conclusively.

Yet I am sure that there is no shinboners anywhere else other than Melbourne. Some talk that the shinboner expression eventuates from Ireland and North Melbourne grasped it, but that is not proved beyong doubt.
