We were always destined to beat Sydney- due to four reasons for those who believe in omens or are superstitious.
(1): Sydney has not beaten Footscray in Melbourne since 1987.
That goes back to the Waverely game of 1987, although they did draw with us at the Western Oval in 1991.
(2): South Melbourne up to 1981 and Sydney from 1982 have never defeated Footscray at the MCG at any time.
Although we have never played them there until 1997!
When South Melbourne beat us in the First Semi Final at the height of World War Two in 1942, it was played at Princes Park
(3): Footscray always win at least one finals match in a year where St Kilda is also involved
These are the years in which St Kilda and Footscray have taken part in the same finals series
1961: St Kilda
1992: St Kilda
1997: Sydney
1998: West
2006: Eastern Magpies
2008: Sydney
2009: Brisbane
2010: Sydney
St Kilda took part in all of those finals series
St Kilda did not take part in
1938: Collingwood
1942: South Melbourne
1944: Essendon
1946: Melbourne
1948: Collingwood
1951: Essendon
1974: Collingwood
1976: Geelong
1994: Geelong & Melbourne
1995: Geelong
1999: West Coast & Brisbane
2000: Brisbane
St Kilda didn't play in the 1953, 1954,1956 and 1985 finals series where we did win games, however when they are there- we always win one final.
(4) Which end are we kicking to in MCG Finals: Try to go the Ponsford Stand end in the 1st and 3rd quarters
We kicked to the Punt Road end in the 2nd and 4th quarters. Same as we did in 1985.
This is not a 100% rule, but we tend to lose in MCG finals when we are kicking to the Ponsford Stand end in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
Footscray victory over Sydney assured due to 4 certanties
