English soccer team Hull City seem poised to change their name from Hull City to Hull Tigers.

The nickname (Tigers) the big issue here. It is their nickname, but it looks like it will progress from a 'nickname' to becoming a bona fide name. Just like us where the nickname 'bulldogs' is no longer a nickname because it has progressed to the legal name. Put in this context, here are a few American Presidents and what happens when the nickname evolves into the real name.

Franklin Roosevelt: 1932-1945

Harry Truman: 1935-1952

Ike: 1952-1960

John Kennedy: 1960-1963

Lyndon Johnson: 1963-1968

now for some Australian Prime Ministers

Robert Menzies: 1949- 1966

Harold Holt:1966-1967

John Gorton: 1967-1971

Big Ears: 1971-1972

Gough Whitlam: 1972-1975

Malcolm Fraser: 1975-1983

Bob Hawke: 1983-1991

One of the Australian Prime Ministers named above is appropriate for this saga with the Footscray name. Those advocating how the benefits of changing the name from Footscray to Western Bulldogs will come, is just like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt.

I've been following this saga, and for the life of me I can't understand why you need to change the name. Hull City are known as the Tigers, and if you want to sell "Hull Tigers" merchandise, there's nothing to stop you, so why mess with the name? Is he trying to generate publicity in what is otherwise a rugby league town?

Seems to me like one of those vanity projects, when someone wants to feel they made their mark, and breathed new life into some club, only for reality to strike back and force things to change back to the way they were before, like:

a) Cardiff City's shirts being changed from blue to red, and then back to blue again;

B) Fitzroy's lion being replaced in Brisbane's shirts by that "paddle" thing, only to be reinstated.

The so called "paddle pop lion"  Soon everyone will be able to see a pretty good image of that Paddle Pop lion on a billboard, when the 1984 clash between Fitzroy and Footscray from the Junction Oval is added to Footscray Tube.

This might surprise some people but I am not overly endeared to "the cause" of those from Melbourne who began following Brisbane in 1997. I am definitely more sympathetic to the Fitzroy supporters who said "shove the competition" when Fitzroy finished up at the end of 1996, as opposed to that those that went with Brisbane.

To much 'Angela's Ashes' for me, is the AFL Competition that important to them, that they have to follow a team that is 2 days drive away, because the Queensland team took your nickname from the one that they previously had?

So many complained about the merger/takeover (and rightly too) and I still feel that the competition is irreversibly worsened because Fitzroy was booted out. Yet by supporting Brisbane now, 'maintaining the rage' just does not seem quite right. Just watch 'Angela's Ashes' towards the end to see what I mean, by what Frank Court's mother does.
