Michael Malthouse the Eastern Magpies coach wants the number of players on the interchange bench extended.

Well I reckon this is getting out of hand. One of Footscray's greatest victories ever (and Micky Malthouse was involved with it as our coach back then!) was the 1985 First Semi Final against North Melbourne. Simon Beasley kicks his 100th goals for the season, Doug Hawkins plays a pearler, Brian Royal knocks in a few killer blows, yet the essence of that match was that we went down to the bare 18 on the field early in the FIRST quarter, yes TWO players taken from the field and that was it. Who recalls that? Mark Kellett and Mick Ford off injured and that meant that we had no one left to come on should someone else get injured or a player performing poorly couldn't be dragged or rested.

Surely four substitutes is sufficient? Soon it will be 6 then when they can only rotate with 5 instead of 6, they will be calling for '8 is enough'?

This 'rotations' rubbish- if you have 18 blokes on the field then it is 18 against 18. Rotations should be just a luxury not a God given right. It will end up like Gridiron where the whole bleeding team is substituted- the game will become a complete circus.

Ok I will concede a trade off. This is it- a team can have an interchange of 6 or 8 players whatever, HOWEVER only 4 of that interchange bench can come on- like substitutes in soccer. You can keep the interchange bench but once the fourth player has been introduced to the field of play, that's it, no more - you have used your quota of four. So a team can make changes on account of the state of play, but once the four have had a run, then that is all folks.

It is getting beyond a joke- they will swap the whole teamon and off the bench next like they do in gridiron.
